Pacing in Video Games, Movies, and Storytelling

I’m always looking for refreshing views on writing and often perspectives come from places one doesn’t expect.

The following is a wonderful short video from Penny Arcade on pacing from the standpoint of developing video games and is approached using the movie Star Wars: A New Hope. Only a few minutes (maybe 4).  Replace the word ‘designer’ with ‘writer.’ The ebbs and flows are the same in both professions. Enjoy

Legend of Zelda Fans

Okay, I get that this trailer for a Zelda movie was an April Fool’s joke back in what… 2008? But really, why hasn’t some studio made this as a movie. It’s almost sad that the trailer is too good. This is from the ING Entertainment Games Site. So has anyone heard of a real movie for this game in the making?

Legend of Zelda April Fool\’s

Immortals Movie & Summer Viewing

I’m officially swayed by the Immortals movie trailer. Whether it’s because this is done by the producers of the 300 – a good movie, IMO – or that I’m just ready for another great ancient battle movie. Theseus vs. Hyperion, which should really be called the Titans vs. the Olympians, melds several different legends. Our hero for the world here being the man who battled and defeated the Minotaur. This wrapped with a new legend of the magical Epirus Bow. Good, magic and myth, a good combo.

The special effects look good, the main protagonist isn’t ‘too’ pretty and with Greek mythology woven in how bad can it be? And 11-11-11 lends a certain ominous quality to the release!

Let’s hope we haven’t seen all the good stuff in the trailer, but I’m ready to be entertained.

Here’s my list of movies to watch this summer. I’m a little behind, but no fear, I’ll catch up:

Green Lantern (I’m a DC Comic geek)

X-men First Class (I’m not big on prequels but I’m in)

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Okay, I’m up for big changing truck parts)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Deux (I’ve watched them this far and haven’t been disappointed with converting 700pg books into movies)

Captain America: The First Avenger (geekdom goes for Marvel  as well)

TrollHunter - yes a foreign horror film, a little out of my way but can you say ‘monsters?’

Conan the Barbarian - a new Conan and my favorites of Ron Perlman and Rose McGowan (hmm)

Have I missed any other good ones? Or obscure ones?

The Demon’s Forge Game Trailer – Mature material

A cool looking Game trailer – per their own disclaimer, not suitable for children – though all animated ( YouTube)

Hunted: The Demon’s Forge Game – from inXile Entertainment for release in 2011. Looks like a game with a little bit ‘o humor! Cool graphics.

Demon Humor – all ages

For immature audiences – but all ages!

First Cute Demon Baby (YouTube)

Okay this is lame kid stuff, but cute. More at Kids Jokes UK

What is a devils picket line called ?
A demonstration!
What is the demons’ favourite TV sitcom?
Fiends !

Speaking of Demons – Game trailer

I have my own opinion of what demons look like but this game, Shadows of the Damned (trailer from YouTube), has some impressive looking graphics and … yes, the demons look cool. Be forewarned, there’s digital blood. Evidently, coming out this year for PS3 and Xbox.

The Mark of Kane

A Thaddeus Kane Novel

Available from Amazon, Amazon UK, Smashwords, OmniLit, Barnes & Noble

Demons, sorcerers, immortals – a little evil goes a long way

Human sorcerers bent on power are disrupting the underworld with demonic possessions and L.A. with murders. Half-demon half-human, Thaddeus Kane is the bloodhound for his clan, charged with finding the sorcerers and destroying them. His personal rules have always been clear—save his clan, protect innocents, and survive. Solicited for help by a demon from another clan, Kane’s first instinct is to blow her off. Until she dangles his one weakness beneath his nose—a mortal threat to prophetic children. Loyalties stretched in his race to find pre-emerging Irins and wizards, Kane struggles to ward off the danger to his clan. His previously harried, but manageable, life now swirls with secrets, until one fatal shot changes everything he believed about his past, turning the table on enemies and allies alike.
